Quick Tips to Make Web Sites More Accessible

In September 2003, the World Institute on Disability's Access to Assets Program conducted a survey to assess the needs and resources of the asset building community. Not one of the programs surveyed had an accessible web site. Much of the problem concerning web accessibility is the confusion over what standards to follow, as well as the belief that making a web site accessible is a costly, complicated process. In order to simplify, EQUITY recommends the following:

QUICK TIPS TO MAKE ACCESSIBLE WEB SITES

  1. Provide text equivalence for non-text elements (pictures, images, etc.)
  2. Ensure good color contrast between foreground and background
  3. Pages must be usable when scripts and applets are turned off or not supported
  4. Avoid movement in pages
  5. Avoid pop-ups and don't change windows without telling user
  6. Divide large blocks of information into manageable chunks
  7. Clearly identify the target of each link
  8. Use the clearest and simplest language possible
