Position Summary

The Emergency, Disaster and Climate Resilience Specialist supports all WID emergency, disaster, climate and humanitarian action domain efforts to transform the future of disability inclusion before, during and after disasters. This position is responsible for the development and execution of training and technical assistance opportunities, finding and writing grant proposals, and project management for appropriate programs. You will also be responsible for producing content on current affairs and relevant topics in the form of white papers, policy, and online content. This role has fast turn-arounds and will need the ability to multitask and work well in teams.  

HOURS: 40 hours per week

Subject Matter Expertise

  • Demonstrated experience in both U.S. and International disability-inclusive emergency, disaster, climate and humanitarian action.
  • Strong understanding of the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and other US and global disability rights and disaster policies.
  • Understands analyzes and can simplify complex data and pertinent information associated with disability and disasters to be accessible to a wide variety of users.

Content Development and Presentations

  • Demonstrated ability to write reports, white papers, social media, online articles, and blog posts on disability inclusion before, during and after disasters.
  • Experience with curriculum design.
  • Ability to write, proofread, and edit content to strengthen final products.
  • Demonstrated success with writing grant proposals.
  • Identifying and developing and maintaining relationships with funders.
  • Experience with and understanding of policy development and advocacy strategies to advance disability and human rights and action for disability-inclusive Emergency, Disaster, humanitarian action, and Climate Resilience.
  • Leads and/or assists with the implementation of training efforts and community preparedness opportunities with the demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Comfortable working with and leading a team and/or volunteers on logistics leading up to and during training and events.

Project Management

  • Experienced in creating timelines, meeting deadlines, and leading teams to ensure project deliverables.
  • Leads the planning, development, and coordination of grants, policy initiatives, events, tools, and products. 
  • Understanding of non-profit budgeting and the ability to manage a budget.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be knowledgeable and have experience in disability-inclusive emergency preparedness, disaster risk reduction, humanitarian action and climate resilience.
  • Experience with independent living philosophy, eliminating systematic oppression and the inclusion of people with disabilities as key to the success of the larger social justice movement.
  • Experience using MS Office Suite, Dropbox, Zoom, Google Apps suite and the Internet.
  • Professional writing and communication skills.
  • Friendly, team player, conscientious, organized, detail-oriented, punctual.
  • Works well independently, takes initiative.
  • Quick learner, ability to problem solve.
  • Sense of humor, enjoys building strong relationships with co-workers.

  • Multilingual
  • Has published on relevant topics
  • Brings key relationships
  • Lived experience with disability

Status: Exempt, generous benefits package

Compensation: Commensurate with experience
